Selected U.S. documents; D&D leaflet dated September 19, 2025; checked October 4, 2026
Selected U.S. English document terms checked October 4, 2026. Not all brands, product variants, purchase vintages or a ranking of durability. Full applicable terms and law control.
Sources and scope checked .
Compare the warranty document, not just the word "lifetime." For gate hardware, coverage can change with the exact model, residential/commercial application, eligible purchaser, finish, purchase paperwork and excluded labor. Warranty duration is not an independently tested product lifespan.
This is a selected U.S. document comparison, checked October 4, 2026, not a ranking of every hardware brand. An important source conflict is unresolved: D&D's public page describes ownership-lifetime coverage, but its linked U.S. leaflet states finite periods. Confirm which terms apply to your purchase before relying on either summary.
Selected hardware warranty terms
The linked D&D U.S. leaflet gives MagnaLatch Top Pull and Vertical Pull a 20-year residential mechanical term and a 5-year commercial term, subject to its definitions and exclusions. D&D U.S. SA-F15 limited-warranty leaflet.
| Product or provision | Residential term in cited document | Commercial term in cited document | Product and document qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| D&D base mechanical terms | 10 years | 5 years | Base clause 1 only; product-specific clauses can vary or exclude it. English clause 1. |
| D&D MagnaLatch Top Pull / Vertical Pull mechanical | 20 years | 5 years | Private sole-occupancy residential use excludes business use; not all MagnaLatch models. English clause 2(d). |
| D&D TruClose Heavy Duty / Heavy Duty Multi Adjust mechanical | 20 years | 5 years | Named products only; residential and commercial definitions in leaflet apply. English clause 2(c). |
| D&D Wood Hardware | 5 years | 5 years | Named range; other exclusions and limits apply. English clause 2(k). |
| D&D SureClose | 3 years | 3 years | Gate weight/dimension limits are specifically required; not an installation approval. English clause 2(g). |
| D&D electrical/electronic components | 2 years | 2 years | Batteries excluded; separate from the mechanical product period. English clause 2(a). |
| National Hardware mechanical and finish terms | While eligible original purchaser occupies original residence | Excluded in cited document | Nontransferable; authorized seller restriction unless prohibited by law. Mechanical and finish warranties have separate descriptions. Mechanical/Finish Limited Warranty; Exclusions. |
The D&D entries come from the English clauses of its SA-F15 leaflet, whose footer is dated September 19, 2025. Its residential definition requires private, sole-occupancy usage excluding business use. Product-specific clauses can vary the base term; a product family name alone is not sufficient to select the right row. We have not established that this version governs every older purchase. D&D full leaflet.
National Hardware's linked document limits its mechanical and finish warranties to the eligible original residential purchaser while occupying the original residence, excludes commercial use and states that the warranties are nontransferable. National Hardware NHWarranty2 document.
National Hardware's linked PDF is undated. The cited document also limits eligible purchase channels to authorized sellers unless the restriction is prohibited by law. Do not interpret its residence-based endpoint as commercial coverage, transfer to a later homeowner or coverage for every historical product. National Hardware document.
Mechanical, finish and labor are separate
D&D's cited leaflet has a separate 10-year finish provision for specified polymer parts and MagnaLatch Top Pull/Vertical Pull finishes; removal, refitment and replacement charges are excluded. D&D U.S. SA-F15 limited-warranty leaflet.
The 20-year mechanical term for a named D&D latch does not automatically make its finish, batteries, labor or every other component a 20-year benefit. The cited leaflet's electrical/electronic term is two years and excludes batteries. Other cosmetic and finish cases have additional limits. Read the exact provision before summarizing an installed gate's coverage.
National's document separately describes mechanical and finish warranties, with exclusions and specified remedies. It excludes labor and other costs; a replacement part is not a promise to pay for a complete gate removal and reinstall. National Hardware remedies and exclusions.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What exactly failed? | Mechanical operation, finish appearance and installation issues may have different terms |
| Which model and document? | A range name or web headline may not identify the applicable provision |
| Who bought it, and where is it used? | Original-owner, residence, seller and application restrictions can affect eligibility |
| What remedy is described? | Product repair/replacement, refund and installed labor are different costs |
| What records are required? | Receipt, purchase date, care history and authorization can matter |

</figure>When the headline and document differ
On October 4, 2026, D&D's public warranty page described ownership-lifetime coverage, while its linked U.S. leaflet stated finite base and product-specific periods. D&D U.S. Warranties & Liability page. D&D U.S. SA-F15 limited-warranty leaflet.
We are reporting the mismatch, not deciding which wording legally controls your transaction or declaring that earlier rights disappeared. Our table identifies what the linked leaflet says instead of silently treating it as a universal override. Keep the warranty delivered with the product, purchase date and seller confirmation.
A useful question to the manufacturer or seller is: "For model [exact model], purchased [date] from [seller] for [actual application], which warranty document/version applies? Your public page and linked leaflet use different duration descriptions. Please confirm the mechanical, finish and removal/labor terms in writing." This is an original inquiry prompt, not a legal notice or predetermined coverage decision.
Before buying or making a claim
Save the exact SKU/model, dated receipt, installed-use description and applicable warranty file together. Ask separately about registration, eligible channels, care requirements, prohibited alterations and return instructions. The warranty claim checklist supplies an evidence record; the vinyl warranty comparison addresses different fence products and transfer/proration questions.
A warranty table is not a pool-barrier approval or automated-gate safety assessment. Use the automated gate handoff checklist for system-level documentation and obtain qualified service for unsafe equipment. Find fence suppliers for exact product terms or contractors for a separately stated installation/workmanship warranty.
Methodology and reuse
We reviewed D&D's public summary and the English provisions in the linked three-language PDF, plus National's public page and all three pages of its linked document. We did not blend inconsistent translated provisions, perform reliability testing or survey warranty approvals. The CSV preserves product, application, locator and qualification in each row. When citing a duration, include the document/version and product restriction; when citing the mismatch, include the October 4, 2026 observation date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is all D&D gate hardware covered for life?
That blanket statement is not supported by the conflicting documents reviewed here. The public summary and linked finite-term leaflet differ. Ask D&D or the seller which version covers the exact purchase.
Does a long hardware warranty prove a gate will last that long?
No. A conditional document term is not a product life test or an installed-system guarantee. Use, care, exclusions and the remedy remain relevant.
Does National Hardware's cited warranty cover commercial use?
The linked document reviewed here excludes commercial use and describes eligible original-residential-purchaser coverage. Confirm the actual purchase's terms rather than generalizing from a lifetime label.
