Census 2022 NAICS definitions, checked October 2026
U.S. 2022 industry classification reference, not advice selecting a legal/tax classification or an estimate of the number of fence companies.
Sources and scope checked .
Fence installation is an example within U.S. 2022 NAICS 238990, All Other Specialty Trade Contractors. That group also includes unrelated activities; its establishment count or revenue is not a fence-industry-only total. Official Census definition.
This reference distinguishes installers, distributors and manufacturers using the checked Census definitions. It helps researchers avoid a common statistical error without pretending to select a legal, tax or administrative classification for every business.

| 423310 | Lumber, Plywood, Millwork, and Wood Panel Merchant Wholesalers | Merchant wholesale distribution of wood fencing | Includes other activities; not fencing-only |

Sources: 238990, 423310, 423390, 332618. These are selected activity examples, not an exhaustive mapping of every fence-related enterprise. A product made from purchased wire is a different activity from wholesale distribution or installation.
Why 238990 does not answer how many fence companies exist
The name All Other Specialty Trade Contractors signals a broad industry group. The official definition includes fence installation alongside other specialty construction activities. Taking every establishment or dollar in that bucket and labeling it fencing overstates what the data can support.
The same caution applies to supplier codes. 423310 includes more than wood fencing, and 423390 includes nonwood fencing alongside other construction materials. A broad wholesale bucket cannot be turned into a fence-supplier census simply by changing the chart title.
We therefore do not publish a supposedly exact national fence-company count from these groups. A directory inventory is also not a national census: coverage, duplicates, inactive records, branches and businesses outside the inventory affect the denominator. The industry statistics reference uses a different, explicitly scoped workforce measure instead.
Industry codes are not occupation codes
NAICS classifies business economic activities. SOC classifies occupations. BLS fence erector statistics use SOC 47-4031, describing wage-and-salary workers in that occupation. Those people can work across industry groups; the occupation total is not the number of companies, owners, independent contractors or all staff employed by fencing businesses. BLS workforce reference and sources.
SIC is another classification system, not an interchangeable label for the same NAICS or SOC number. Keep the system and vintage explicit when joining sources. A code-only spreadsheet without those fields can quietly mix incompatible classifications.
Keep establishments, firms, employment and revenue separate
| Measure | Question it answers | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Establishments | Number of business operating locations in the source scope | Unique fence-only companies or owners |
| Firms | Business organizations under the source's definition | Number of jobs, locations or installed fences |
| Employment | Workers/jobs measured by the source | Business count, owner income or installation prices |
| Receipts or revenue | Monetary activity under the source's definition | Profit, units installed or fencing-only sales in a broad bucket |
| Directory records | Entries included in that directory | Complete active-business population |
Employer and nonemployer datasets have different scopes. Do not add them without understanding whether the units, coverage and business definitions are comparable. Similarly, a branch count should not automatically become a unique company count.
A classification checklist for a real business
- Identify the principal activity using the actual business operations, not only the website's marketing label.
- Separate installation, wholesale distribution and manufacturing activities before looking for a matching definition.
- Read the full official definition and cross-references for the requested classification vintage.
- Ask the requesting agency, adviser or form provider how it wants mixed activities handled.
- Record the selected code, year/version and reason with the submission rather than treating this page as approval.
The table is a research reference, not accounting, legal or tax advice. A contractor that also distributes materials or manufactures products may need more careful review than a single installation example. We do not assign codes to reader businesses or promise a particular eligibility outcome.
A data audit before publishing an industry statistic
For every proposed count, record source, period, geography, classification system/vintage, unit and coverage. Check whether the source includes only employers, only certain locations, self-employed workers or other activities. State the uncertainty and exclusions alongside the headline, not in a hidden footnote.
If a source cannot isolate fencing, either publish the broader category under its correct name or decline to claim a fence-only number. That restraint makes a reference more useful to journalists and AI-assisted writers than a confident figure with the wrong denominator.
For operational tools, use the contractor job-costing worksheet or supplier RFQ. For actual business discovery, use our contractor and supplier directories. These serve different questions from a national industry classification.

Fence Advisors checked the four official 2022 Census definitions in October 2026. The CSV records the code, official group, relevant activity, source and boundary; it does not contain an invented company count or a new economic survey. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the NAICS code for fence installation?
Fence installation is an example in the Census 2022 definition of 238990, All Other Specialty Trade Contractors. Verify the appropriate classification for the actual business and requesting agency; the group is not fencing-only.
Can I use 238990 employment or sales as the size of the fence industry?
Not as a fencing-only total. The code includes other activities. Keep the official group name and coverage, or use a source that actually isolates the measure you need.
Are fence erectors and fence companies the same statistic?
No. Fence erector workforce estimates use an occupation classification and count scoped jobs/workers, not companies. Industry classifications and occupation classifications answer different questions.
